Consumer:Using sucralfate together with phenytoin may decrease the effects of phenytoin. Separate phenytoin at least two hours before or 6 hours after sucralfate and contact your doctor if loss of seizure control occurs. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor
Professional:ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of oral phenytoin and may reduce its therapeutic effect. Sucralfate may interact in a similar way with other oral hydantoins.
MANAGEMENT: Patients should be advised to take phenytoin at least two hours before or 6 hours after sucralfate and to notify their physician if loss of seizure control occurs.
