Relevance: 21.12.2022 Reviewer: Shkutko P.M., M.D., in

A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Using fosphenytoin together with mexiletine may decrease the effects of mexiletine. Contact your doctor if your condition changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Hydantoins may induce the hepatic metabolism of mexiletine. Plasma mexiletine levels and mexiletine effectiveness may be decreased.

MANAGEMENT: It is recommended that the antiarrhythmic effectiveness of mexiletine be monitored and that mexiletine dosage be increased as needed. Also, when hydantoin is withdrawn, the clinician should be aware of the risk of mexiletine toxicity.
