Consumer:

Doxycycline and calcium carbonate should not be taken orally at the same time. Products that contain magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, and/or other minerals may interfere with the absorption of doxycycline into the bloodstream and reduce its effectiveness. If possible, it may be best to avoid taking calcium carbonate while your are being treated with doxycycline. Otherwise, you should separate their dosing times by 2 to 4 hours. Talk to a healthcare professional if you are not sure whether a product contains something that could potentially interact with your medication or if you have questions on how to take this or other medications you are prescribed. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Administration of a tetracycline with aluminum, calcium, or magnesium salts significantly decreases tetracycline serum concentrations. The proposed mechanism is chelation of tetracycline by the cation, forming an insoluble complex that is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The interaction has also been reported with parenteral doxycycline and oral antacids.

MANAGEMENT: The administration of tetracyclines and preparations containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium should be separated by two to four hours.
