Abacavir and Lamivudine Tablets and Methadone Oral Concentrate
Determining the interaction of Abacavir and Lamivudine Tablets and Methadone Oral Concentrate and the possibility of their joint administration.
In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Using methadone together with abacavir may decrease the effects of methadone. Your response to methadone should be monitored more closely and your doctor should be contacted if your condition changes . If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: The concomitant administration of abacavir may modestly increase the clearance of methadone. The mechanism is unknown. In a study of eleven patients receiving oral methadone (40 mg and 90 mg daily) and abacavir (600 mg twice daily), methadone clearance increased by 22%. This change is generally clinically insignificant but a small number of patients may require a higher methadone dose.
MANAGEMENT: Pharmacologic response to methadone should be monitored more closely whenever abacavir is added to or withdrawn from therapy, and the dosage adjusted as necessary.
