Consumer:

Using dextran, low molecular weight and abciximab is not recommended. Using these medications together can cause you to bleed more easily. Call your doctor promptly if you have any unusual bleeding or bruising, vomiting, blood in your urine or stools, headache, dizziness, or weakness. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

CONTRAINDICATED: The risk of bleeding is increased when dextran and abciximab are administered concurrently. In the EPIC trial, 5 of 11 patients who received low molecular weight dextran, abciximab, and oral anticoagulants developed major bleeding and 4 of 11 had minor bleeding events, while there were no bleeding events in 5 patients who received placebo and dextran.

MANAGEMENT: The use of dextran before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or intent to use it during PCI is considered contraindicated by the manufacturer of abciximab.
