Consumer:

Using lithium together with ARIPiprazole may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Rarely, a syndrome consisting of weakness, lethargy, fever, tremors, confusion, abnormal muscle movements, and increased white blood cells and other lab values has also been reported during combined use of these medications. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Coadministration of lithium with neuroleptic agents, particularly haloperidol, has been associated with rare cases of an encephalopathic syndrome characterized by weakness, lethargy, fever, tremors, confusion, extrapyramidal symptoms, leukocytosis, and elevated liver enzymes and blood urea nitrogen. This syndrome may be similar to, or the same as, neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Other, more common central nervous system effects may also be increased, such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination.

MANAGEMENT: Close monitoring for central nervous system adverse effects is recommended when lithium is used with neuroleptic agents. Dosage adjustments or discontinuation of one or both drugs may be necessary if an interaction is suspected.
