Ask your doctor before using trimethoprim together with ethanol. Do not drink alcohol while you are taking trimethoprim. You may have unpleasant side effects such as fast heartbeats, warmth or redness under your skin, tingly feeling, nausea, and vomiting. Check your food and medicine labels to be sure these products do not contain alcohol. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

GENERALLY AVOID: Two cases have been reported in which patients on sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim therapy, after consuming beer, reported flushing, heart palpitations, dyspnea, headache, and nausea (disulfiram - alcohol type reactions). The proposed mechanism is inhibition of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase resulting in acetaldehyde accumulation.

MANAGEMENT: Patients should be alerted to the potential for this interaction, and advised to avoid alcohol while taking sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.
