Consumer:Using azithromycin together with nelfinavir can increase the effects of azithromycin. Call your doctor if you have symptoms of nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, diarrhea that is watery or bloody, chest pain, or uneven heartbeats. You may need a dose adjustment or special test if you use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: The concomitant administration of nelfinavir may significantly increase plasma concentrations of azithromycin. The mechanism is unknown. When single doses of azithromycin 1200 mg were given after nelfinavir 750 mg 3 times daily for 11 days, azithromycin area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and peak plasma concentrations (Cmax) increased by more than 2-fold. Nelfinavir AUC and Cmax decreased slightly.
MANAGEMENT: Close monitoring for azithromycin side effects such as hearing disturbances and liver enzyme elevations is recommended during concomitant administration.
