Consumer:

Using zidovudine together with interferon gamma-1b can increase the risk of side effects that affect your bone marrow function, resulting in low numbers of different types of blood cells. You may be more likely to develop anemia, bleeding problems, or infections. Contact your doctor if you develop paleness, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, unusual bruising or bleeding, fever, chills, diarrhea, sore throat, muscle aches, shortness of breath, blood in phlegm, weight loss, red or inflamed skin, body sores, and pain or burning during urination. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR CLOSELY: The coadministration of interferons and zidovudine (AZT) may result in severe bone marrow toxicity, most often manifested as granulocytopenia and/or thrombocytopenia. The precise mechanism is unknown. These agents are individually myelotoxic, with potentially additive or synergistic effects; interferons may also decrease the metabolism of zidovudine.

MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if concomitant therapy is necessary, particularly with the alfa interferons. Complete blood counts, differential and platelet counts should be performed regularly and drug dosages adjusted accordingly. Patients should be advised to promptly report symptoms such as chills, fever, sore throat, pale skin, or unusual fatigue to their physician. Cessation of one or all drugs may be necessary if toxicity develops.
