Relevance: 04.08.2023 Reviewer: Shkutko P.M., M.D., in

In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Using guar gum together with metFORMIN can decrease the effects of metFORMIN and could cause hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Symptoms of high blood sugar are increased thirst, increased hunger, and increased urination. Talk with your doctor before using guar gum together with metFORMIN. You may need a dose adjustment and you may need to check your blood sugar more often. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Concurrent administration of guar gum may decrease the serum levels of metformin by reducing its absorption. In a study of six healthy volunteers, administration of metformin 1700 mg in combination with 10 grams of guar gum resulted in reduced mean metformin serum concentrations between 1.5 and 5 hours post-dose compared to administration with only a meal consisting of 35 grams of carbohydrate. The absorption rate of metformin was decreased over the first 6 hours, and the area under the serum concentration-time curve (AUC) was reduced 39% by guar gum.

MANAGEMENT: Although guar gum in doses of approximately 10 to 15 grams/day may be used to help lower postprandial blood glucose levels in diabetics, the possibility of reduced hypoglycemic response to metformin should be considered during coadministration. Blood glucose should be monitored closely.
