Metformin, when coadministered with acarbose may have a delayed onset of action and decreased bioavailability. Both the peak serum concentration and AUC were significantly reduced by 35%. The mechanism appears to be due to delayed intestinal absorption of metformin. No alterations in therapy are suggested. The clinician may wish to monitor more closely for decreased metformin response.
