MetFORMIN may reduce the blood levels and effects of trospium. Contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Coadministration with metformin may decrease the plasma concentrations of trospium. The mechanism of interaction has not been established. In 44 healthy subjects, administration of trospium chloride extended-release 60 mg once daily in combination with metformin immediate-release 500 mg twice daily reduced the steady-state mean trospium peak plasma concentration (Cmax) by 34% and systemic exposure (AUC) by 29%. The clinical relevance of these changes is unknown. Whether metformin at higher dosages may have a greater effect on trospium pharmacokinetics has not been investigated. Trospium chloride did not significantly affect the steady-state pharmacokinetics of metformin.

MANAGEMENT: Patients should be monitored for potentially diminished efficacy of trospium chloride during coadministration with metformin.
