Consumer:Using ramipril together with metFORMIN may increase the effects of metFORMIN on lowering blood sugar. This could cause your blood sugar levels to get too low. Signs of low blood sugar include headache, hunger, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, nervousness, sweating, confusion, and tremor. Talk with your doctor before using ramipril together with metFORMIN. You may need a dose adjustment and you may need to check your blood sugar more often. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Limited data suggest that ACE inhibitors may potentiate the hypoglycemic effects of oral antidiabetic drugs, including metformin. The mechanism is unknown. Symptomatic and sometimes severe hypoglycemia has occurred.
MANAGEMENT: Close monitoring for the development of hypoglycemia is recommended if ACE inhibitors are coadministered with metformin, particularly in patients with advanced age and/or renal impairment. Dosage adjustments may be required if an interaction is suspected. Patients should be apprised of the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia (e.g., headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, hunger, tremor, weakness, sweating, palpitations), how to treat it, and to contact their physician if it occurs. Patients should be observed for loss of glycemic control when ACE inhibitors are withdrawn.
