Consumer:Before taking doxycycline, tell your doctor if you also use carBAMazepine. You may need dose adjustments or special tests in order to safely take both medications together. This combination may decrease the levels of doxycycline in your body. The effectiveness of doxycycline may also be decreased. It is important that you tell your healthcare provider about all other medications that you are using including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using your medications without first talking to your doctor first.
Professional:MONITOR: Carbamazepine may significantly decrease serum levels and the half-life of doxycycline. The mechanism may be related to induction of doxycycline metabolism. Antimicrobial effectiveness may be decreased and therapeutic failure may occur.
MANAGEMENT: If these drugs must be used together, close monitoring of the patient's clinical response is recommended. An increase in doxycycline dosage may be necessary, or it may be necessary to use an alternative antimicrobial therapy with a renally excreted tetracycline (demeclocycline, oxytetracycline, or tetracycline) or an antimicrobial agent of a different class.
