Consumer:

Ask your doctor before using zidovudine together with DOXOrubicin. Using these medications together may cause zidovudine to be less effective. This can also cause decreased bone marrow function and blood problems. Contact your doctor if you experience extreme fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding, black, bloody or tarry stools, or fever, chills, or other signs of infection. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

GENERALLY AVOID: Doxorubicin has been shown to inhibit the phosphorylation of zidovudine to its active triphosphate form in vitro. The mechanism and clinical significance of this interaction is unknown. However, the potential for diminished antiretroviral activity of zidovudine should be considered. In addition, the myelotoxic effects of these agents may be additive when given in combination.

MANAGEMENT: The concomitant use of zidovudine and doxorubicin should be avoided.
