Triprolidine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.

Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).

The combination of pseudoephedrine and triprolidine is used to treat runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and sinus congestion caused by allergies, the common cold, or the flu.

Altafed may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Used to increase serum sodium concentrations in hospitalized patients with euvolemic or hypervolemic hyponatremia. Use in patients with hypervolemic hyponatremia associated with heart failure only after consideration of other treatment options; limited data on safety in this patient population. Not indicated for the treatment of hypovolemic hyponatremia.

Use of conivaptan to increase serum sodium concentrations has not been established to provide symptomatic benefit to patients.

Not indicated for the treatment of CHF; efficacy not established for this indication.
