A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Using ketamine together with aminophylline may cause seizures. Contact your doctor if you experience confusion, seizures, and other mental status changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Cases of extensor-type seizures have been reported in four asthmatic patients who received aminophylline following induction of anesthesia with ketamine. Causality was not clearly determined due to the presence of other anesthetics. Animal studies suggest that the mechanism of this interaction may involve a lowering of the seizure threshold. Theophylline, dyphylline, and oxtriphylline may also interact.

MANAGEMENT: If aminophylline and ketamine must be used concomitantly, caution should be exercised.
