Consumer:Talk to your doctor before using amiodarone together with telithromycin. Combining these drugs can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with these drugs, whether together or alone. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:GENERALLY AVOID: Telithromycin has the potential to prolong the QT interval of the electrocardiogram in some patients. Theoretically, coadministration with other agents that can prolong the QT interval may result in elevated risk of ventricular arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and torsade de pointes, because of additive arrhythmogenic potential related to their effects on cardiac conduction.
MANAGEMENT: Telithromycin should be avoided in patients treated with class IA (e.g., disopyramide, quinidine, procainamide) or class III (e.g., amiodarone, dofetilide, sotalol) antiarrhythmic agents.
