Consumer:

Ask your doctor before using cyclophosphamide together with succinylcholine. Cyclophosphamide may increase the effects of succinylcholine. Contact your doctor immediately if your condition worsens or if you have breathing difficulty. You may need a dose adjustment if you use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

GENERALLY AVOID: Cyclophosphamide may increase the effects of succinylcholine. The mechanism is irreversible inhibition of plasma cholinesterase resulting in decreased metabolism of some neuromuscular blockers. Apnea has been associated with this drug combination. Reductions in cholinesterase levels of 35% to 70% have been reported. This effect may last for up to several weeks after administration of cyclophosphamide.

MANAGEMENT: Succinylcholine should probably be avoided in patients with low cholinesterase levels. Other patients should be closely monitored for excessive and prolonged neuromuscular blockade and ventilatory support should be available.
