Consumer:Using disulfiram together with paraldehyde is not recommended. Combining these drugs may trigger a reaction similar to the disulfiram reaction, which includes unpleasant side effects such as flushing, throbbing in head and neck, throbbing headache, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, sweating, thirst, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, palpitation, low blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, and confusion. More severe reactions may include heart attack, heart failure, unconsciousness, and convulsions. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:CONTRAINDICATED: The concurrent use of paraldehyde and disulfiram may theoretically result in a disulfiram-like reaction. The mechanism is probably related to inhibition of aldehyde dehydrogenase by disulfiram, resulting in inhibition of paraldehyde metabolism. Accumulation of acetaldehyde probably results. Human studies are not available.
MANAGEMENT: Concomitant use of paraldehyde and disulfiram is considered to be contraindicated.
