Apixaban and Seconal Sodium

Secobarbital may reduce the blood levels of apixaban in some patients, which may make the medication less effective in treating and preventing blood clots. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Coadministration with inducers of CYP450 3A4 and/or P-glycoprotein (P-gp) may decrease the plasma concentration of apixaban, which is a substrate of both the isoenzyme and the efflux transporter. When apixaban was coadministered with the potent CYP450 3A4 and P-gp inducer rifampin (600 mg once a day), mean apixaban peak plasma concentration (Cmax) and systemic exposure (AUC) decreased by 42% and 54%, respectively. No data are available for use with other, less potent CYP450 3A4 or P-gp inducers.

MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised when apixaban is used with inducers of CYP450 3A4 and/or P-gp. Pharmacologic effects of apixaban should be monitored more closely whenever the inducer is added to or withdrawn from therapy.
