Relevance: 12.07.2023 Reviewer: Shkutko P.M., M.D., in

In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Using apraclonidine ophthalmic together with linezolid is not recommended. Combining these medications may elevate blood pressure and increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis, which is a medical emergency. In general, you should wait at least 14 days after stopping linezolid before you start treatment with apraclonidine ophthalmic. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

CONTRAINDICATED: Topically administered alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonists such as apraclonidine are systemically absorbed, with the potential for producing rare but clinically significant systemic effects. Despite relative alpha-2 selectivity, theoretical concerns exist that coadministration with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) may increase the risk of hypertension due to potentiation of alpha-1 stimulation, which produces vasoconstriction. However, the interaction has not been reported in the medical literature.

MANAGEMENT: The use of apraclonidine ophthalmic solution with MAOIs is considered contraindicated. At least 14 days should elapse between discontinuation of MAOI therapy and initiation of treatment with apraclonidine.
