Aptivus and Depakene

Using tipranavir together with valproic acid may decrease the effects of valproic acid. Contact your doctor if your condition changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Coadministration with tipranavir/ritonavir may decrease the plasma concentrations of drugs that are substrates of UGT1A1. The mechanism is accelerated clearance due to induction of UGT1A1 activity by tipranavir.

MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if tipranavir/ritonavir must be used concomitantly with medications that undergo metabolism by UGT1A1, particularly those with a narrow therapeutic range. Dosage adjustments as well as clinical and laboratory monitoring may be appropriate for some drugs whenever tipranavir/ritonavir is added to or withdrawn from therapy.
