Asacol HD affects a substance in the body that causes inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea.

Asacol HD is used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. This medicine is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring.

Some brands of mesalamine are for use only in adults, and some brands are for use in children who are at least 5 years old.

Management of major depressive disorder.

Manufacturers state efficacy in hospital settings not established. However, efficacy has been demonstrated in hospitalized patients with depression, including severe depression, in several studies.

APA states that effectiveness of antidepressants is generally comparable between and within classes of medications, including SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, MAO inhibitors, and other antidepressants (e.g., bupropion, mirtazapine, trazodone).
