Consumer:Ask your doctor before using azaTHIOprine together with mercaptopurine. Using these medications together may cause mercaptopurine to be more effective. Call your doctor at once if you have easy bruising or bleeding, fever, chills, sore throat, flu symptoms, mouth sores, dark urine, severe stomach pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:GENERALLY AVOID: Azathioprine may potentiate the toxicities of 6-mercaptopurine. Azathioprine is metabolized to 6-mercaptopurine in vivo, thus concomitant administration may result in additive adverse effects, including myelosuppression, immunosuppression, and hepatotoxicity. Death was reported in a patient inadvertently prescribed 6-mercaptopurine (100 mg daily) by a physician who was unaware that the patient was already receiving azathioprine (150 mg once a day) for Crohn's disease. The patient developed profound myelosuppression and severe sepsis, and later died.
MANAGEMENT: Concurrent use of azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine should be avoided.
