Treatment of pulmonary multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (i.e., caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to isoniazid and rifampin) in conjunction with other antituberculosis agents.

Designated an orphan drug by FDA for use in treatment of active tuberculosis.

Use only when an effective treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis cannot otherwise be provided.

Safety and efficacy for treatment of drug-susceptible tuberculosis, extrapulmonary (e.g., CNS) tuberculosis, or latent tuberculosis infection not established; use not recommended.

Safety and efficacy for treatment of infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) not established; use not recommended.

Patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis are at high risk for treatment failure and acquisition of further drug resistance. ATS, CDC, and IDSA recommend that such patients be referred to or that consultation be obtained from a specialized treatment center as identified by local or state health departments or the CDC.

Triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide combination is used alone or with other medicines to treat water retention (edema) or high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk of heart attacks. These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled.

Triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide are both diuretic medicines (water pills). They reduce the amount of water in the body by increasing the flow of urine, which helps lower the blood pressure. Triamterene helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low.
