Betamethasone is a steroid that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.

Betamethasone topical (for the skin) is used to treat the inflammation and itching caused by a number of skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Betamethasone topical may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who are intolerant of other IOP-lowering drugs or who have not responded adequately (i.e., failed to achieve target IOP as determined after multiple measurements over time) to another IOP-lowering drug.

Safety and efficacy not established for the treatment of angle-closure, inflammatory, or neovascular glaucoma.

At least as effective as latanoprost 0.005% in controlling diurnal IOP; may be more effective than timolol 0.5% in reducing IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
