Bexarotene (Systemic) and Vitamin A

Using vitamin A together with bexarotene may lead to increased side effects. Contact your doctor if you experience tiredness, discomfort, lethargy, upset stomach, decreased appetite, vomiting, slow or decreased growth, joint soreness, irritability, headache, drying and cracking of the lips and skin, hair loss, and yellowing of the skin. You should be advised to limit vitamin A supplements to 15,000 IU/day to avoid potential additive toxic effects. You may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. ADJUST DOSE: Bexarotene is structurally related to vitamin A and may theoretically share some of the same toxicities. However, unlike vitamin A and other retinoids that bind retinoic acid receptors, bexarotene selectively activates retinoid X receptors, which can produce biologic activity distinct from the others.

MANAGEMENT: Patients should be advised to limit vitamin A supplements to 15,000 IU/day to avoid potential additive toxic effects.
