Using carBAMazepine together with praziquantel may decrease the effects of praziquantel. Contact your doctor if your condition changes. ADJUST DOSE: One study has demonstrated that the oral bioavailability of praziquantel decreases significantly when it is given to patients maintained on carbamazepine. Maximum plasma praziquantel concentrations in patients on carbamazepine were 8% of those in control subjects. The proposed mechanism is induction of CYP450 hepatic metabolism. Treatment failure may occur.

MANAGEMENT: Increasing the praziquantel dose or adding cimetidine to the regimen (which is expected to increase praziquantel serum levels) have been suggested as means of controlling the interaction; however, their effectiveness has not been definitely established. Clinical response should be closely monitored.
