Consumer:Boceprevir may increase the blood levels and effects of desipramine. This can increase the risk of side effects such as nausea, dizziness, and low blood pressure. You may need a dose adjustment or frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you, and use caution when getting up from a sitting or lying position. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: According to the product information for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3/4A protease inhibitors, boceprevir and telaprevir, plasma concentrations of the antidepressants desipramine and trazodone may be increased when coadministered with these agents. The mechanism may involve inhibition of CYP450 3A4 metabolism. No pharmacokinetic data are currently available; however, adverse effects such as nausea, dizziness, hypotension, and syncope may be increased.
MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if desipramine or trazodone is used in combination with HCV NS3/4A protease inhibitors. A lower dosage of the antidepressant should be considered.
