Using bromocriptine together with erythromycin may increase the effects of bromocriptine. Contact your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, constipation, sweating, pale skin, dizziness, drowsiness, yawning, confusion, hallucinations, muscle movements you cannot control, or loss of balance or coordination. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Certain macrolide antibiotics may decrease the hepatic metabolism of bromocriptine. The proposed mechanism of the interaction is inhibition of CYP450 3A4. High bromocriptine plasma levels have been associated with dyskinesia, particularly in the elderly receiving bromocriptine for the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

MANAGEMENT: Patients should be monitored for signs of toxicity, including headache, hypotension, nausea, and dyskinesia. A reduction in bromocriptine dosage may be necessary. Some authorities suggest that the bromocriptine dose may need to be reduced by up to 50% in order to avoid toxicity. Although clinical data are lacking, some manufacturers advise that when high bromocriptine levels are observed consideration should be given to the increased risk of dyskinesia.
