Consumer:Ask your doctor before using nitroglycerin together with bromocriptine. Using nitroglycerin together with bromocriptine can increase the effects of bromocriptine. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience an irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, weakness, or coldness, numbness, or pain in the hands, feet, arms, or legs. You may need a dose adjustment or special test if you use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:GENERALLY AVOID: Ergot alkaloids, by causing vasoconstriction, may theoretically antagonize the effects of nitrates. In addition, nitrates may increase splanchnic blood flow, resulting in decreased first-pass metabolism of dihydroergotamine and increased bioavailability.
MANAGEMENT: This combination should generally be avoided. Ergot alkaloids are considered contraindicated in patients with ischemic heart disease.
