Determining the interaction of Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Hydroxide Chewable Tablets and Generlac and the possibility of their joint administration.

A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Consumer information for this minor interaction is not currently available. Some minor drug interactions may not be clinically relevant in all patients. Minor drug interactions do not usually cause harm or require a change in therapy. However, your healthcare provider can determine if adjustments to your medications are needed.
Professional:Preliminary data from studies in humans and rats suggest that nonabsorbable antacids given concurrently with lactulose may inhibit the reduction in colonic pH induced by lactulose. Theoretically, this may reduce the effectiveness of lactulose in the treatment of portal-systemic encephalopathy, which requires an acidic environment in the colon to promote extraction of ammonia from the blood as well as retention/elimination of ammonia as the ammonium ion. However, the clinical relevance of this interaction has not been fully elucidated.
