Carboplatin and Phenytoin Oral Suspension

Using CARBOplatin together with phenytoin may decrease the effects of phenytoin. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or if you experience loss of seizure control. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Carboplatin may decrease serum phenytoin levels. Loss of seizure control may result. The mechanism of this interaction is unknown. It is not know if carboplatin will interact in a similar manner with other hydantoins.

MANAGEMENT: If carboplatin and phenytoin must be used together, close clinical and laboratory observation for evidence of altered phenytoin effect is recommended. Patients should be advised to notify their caregiver if they experience loss of seizure control.
