Consumer:Ask your doctor before using quiNIDine together with aMILoride. Taking these drugs together can affect the rhythm of your heart. Call your doctor if you have symptoms of irregular heartbeat, chest tightness, blurred vision, nausea, and seizures. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Limited data indicate that amiloride may significantly exaggerate QRS segment prolongation associated with quinidine. In vitro data suggest that the proarrhythmic effect of the combination may be associated with a synergistic increase in sodium channel blockage.
MANAGEMENT: Alternative diuretic therapy, such as a thiazide, is recommended. If amiloride and quinidine must be used together, frequent and careful monitoring of the QRS segment length is recommended.
