Consumer:

Using cholestyramine together with simvastatin may decrease the effects of simvastatin. Administration of simvastatin should be separated by at least four hours after cholestyramine. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: When administered concomitantly, cholestyramine has been reported to decrease the rate and extent of fluvastatin bioavailability. Other bile acid sequestrants may also decrease the bioavailability of other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. The mechanism is most likely due to adsorption of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor to the bile acid sequestrant. Separating administration times has been shown to decrease the interaction.

MANAGEMENT: If therapy with both agents is necessary, the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor should be administered at least 4 hours after the bile acid sequestrant.
