Cholestyramine Light and Vancomycin injection

A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

The following interaction applies only if you are receiving vancomycin orally: cholestyramine may interfere with the absorption of vancomycin when these medications are taken at the same time. This may reduce the blood levels and effects of vancomycin. To prevent or minimize the interaction, vancomycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after the cholestyramine dose. Contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: The concomitant use of oral vancomycin and cholestyramine may antagonize the effects of vancomycin. Cholestyramine binds to vancomycin in the gut.

MANAGEMENT: It is recommended to administer doses of oral vancomycin 1 hour before, or 4 to 6 hours after cholestyramine.
