Cimetidine may decrease the clearance and increase the elimination half-life of quinine. The mechanism of this interaction is unknown, but probably involves inhibition of the hepatic metabolism of quinine. If cimetidine is added to a stable quinine regime, the clinician may want to monitor the patient more closely for dose-dependent quinine toxicity. Ranitidine does not appear to affect metabolism of quinine.
