Clarithromycin and Sustiva

In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Ask your doctor before using clarithromycin together with efavirenz. Using these medications together may cause clarithromycin to be less effective. Alternative antibiotic therapy may be considered. Contact your doctor if your condition worsens or if you develop a rash. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

GENERALLY AVOID: Efavirenz has been shown to decrease the area under the plasma concentration-time curve of clarithromycin (500 mg every 12 hours) by 39%. This interaction is attributable to the enhanced metabolism of clarithromycin caused by efavirenz. A rash has been reported in 46% of patients administered clarithromycin and efavirenz concomitantly.

MANAGEMENT: The manufacturer recommends that alternative therapy such as azithromycin be considered. No dosage adjustments are recommended. If concomitant therapy cannot be avoided, the patient should be monitored for decreased therapeutic effect of clarithromycin.
