Professional:Coadministration of cimetidine (800 mg dosed to steady state) and clarithromycin (500 mg as a single dose) prolonged the absorption of clarithromycin resulting in decreased peak plasma concentration of clarithromycin and its metabolite and significantly increased half lives. There were no changes in clearance or AUC. The mechanism and clinical significance of this interaction are unknown. Patients receiving this combination should be monitored for possible subtherapeutic effects of the antibiotic.
