Using cloNIDine together with verapamil may cause excessively low blood pressure and heart rate. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes during treatment with these medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Coadministration of clonidine with agents known to affect sinus node function of AV nodal conduction may be associated with significantly reduced heart rate. Sinus bradycardia and complete AV block resulting in hospitalization and pacemaker insertion have been reported during the concomitant use of clonidine and diltiazem or verapamil. The exact mechanism of interaction is unknown. However, these drugs individually have been associated with AV node dysfunction and may have additive effects during coadministration.

MANAGEMENT: Heart rate and blood pressure should be closely monitored in patients receiving clonidine in combination with agents known to affect sinus node function of AV nodal conduction such as digitalis and certain calcium channel blockers.
