Consumer:Using colesevelam together with levonorgestrel may decrease the effects of levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel should be administered at least 4 hours before colesevelam. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Colesevelam may decrease the gastrointestinal absorption of contraceptive hormones. A 24% reduction in peak plasma concentration (Cmax) and systemic exposure (AUC) has been reported for ethinyl estradiol (0.035 mg), and a 20% reduction in Cmax has been reported for norethindrone (1 mg).
MANAGEMENT: Oral contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone should be administered at least 4 hours before the colesevelam dose. The same precaution may be applicable to other contraceptive hormones, although data are lacking.
