Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride and Phenelzine Sulfate
Determining the interaction of Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride and Phenelzine Sulfate and the possibility of their joint administration.
In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Cyproheptadine may reverse or reduce the effects of phenelzine. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you have increased symptoms. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Cyproheptadine may antagonize the therapeutic effect of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). This interaction was reported in one patient treated with phenelzine for chronic depression. Another patient developed visual hallucinations following the addition of cyproheptadine to a stabilized regimen of phenelzine. Causality has not been definitely established. The mechanism is unknown but may be related to the antiserotonergic activity of cyproheptadine. MAOIs may also potentiate the sedative and anticholinergic effects of cyproheptadine.
MANAGEMENT: Patients should be monitored for potentially diminished therapeutic response to MAOIs and increased antihistaminic effects of cyproheptadine during coadministration. Discontinuation of cyproheptadine may be necessary if an interaction is suspected.
