Relevance: 13.05.2022 Reviewer: Shkutko P.M., M.D., in

A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Rifabutin may reduce the blood levels and effects of dapsone. Contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Rifabutin may decrease plasma concentrations of dapsone by inducing its CYP450 3A4 hepatic metabolism. In HIV-infected patients, including rapid and slow acetylators, coadministration of rifabutin (300 mg/day) decreased the AUC of dapsone (50 mg/day) by 27%-40%.

MANAGEMENT: Patients on concomitant therapy should be monitored for inadequate response to dapsone. Dosages should be adjusted as necessary.
