Using colesevelam together with ethinyl estradiol may decrease the effects of ethinyl estradiol. Ethinyl estradiol should be administered at least 4 hours before colesevelam. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Colesevelam may decrease the gastrointestinal absorption of contraceptive hormones. A 24% reduction in peak plasma concentration (Cmax) and systemic exposure (AUC) has been reported for ethinyl estradiol (0.035 mg), and a 20% reduction in Cmax has been reported for norethindrone (1 mg).

MANAGEMENT: Oral contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone should be administered at least 4 hours before the colesevelam dose. The same precaution may be applicable to other contraceptive hormones, although data are lacking.
