Relevance: 27.05.2023 Reviewer: Shkutko P.M., M.D., in

In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Ask your doctor before using probenecid together with penicillAMINE. Using these medications together can increase the effects of penicillAMINE. This can lead to fever, chills, sore throat, unusual bruising or bleeding, blood in your urine, unexplained shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, muscle weakness, and double vision. These symptoms could be early signs of dangerous side effects. You may need a dose adjustment or special test if you use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

GENERALLY AVOID: Probenecid may interfere with penicillamine metabolite elimination. The therapeutic effect of penicillamine may be reduced and increased toxicity may occur. In one study with two cystinuric patients given single doses of probenecid and penicillamine, increased cysteine excretion and decreased excretion of penicillamine metabolites occurred. There are no other reports of this interaction in the literature.

MANAGEMENT: Concomitant use should be avoided in cystinuric patients.
