Consumer:Ask your doctor before using prochlorperazine together with deferoxamine. Using these medications together may result in a condition known as metabolic encephalopathy. This has been reported in two patients who developed loss of consciousness for 48 to 72 hours. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:GENERALLY AVOID: Limited data suggest that the concomitant administration of deferoxamine and prochlorperazine may result in transient metabolic encephalopathy. Loss of consciousness for 48 to 72 hours has been reported in 2 patients. The mechanism is unknown.
MANAGEMENT: The manufacturer recommends that concomitant use should be avoided.
