Consumer:Using desmopressin together with prednisoLONE may increase the risk of hyponatremia, a condition associated with low levels of salt in the blood. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, lethargy, weakness, muscle cramps, twitching, confusion, seizures, and even death in severe cases. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:CONTRAINDICATED: Coadministration of desmopressin with loop diuretics or systemic or inhaled glucocorticoids may increase the risk of severe hyponatremia. The proposed mechanism involves additive risk of hyponatremia when these drugs are used concurrently.
MANAGEMENT: The concomitant use of desmopressin with loop diuretics or systemic or inhaled glucocorticoids is considered contraindicated. Treatment with desmopressin can be started or resumed 3 days or 5 half-lives after the glucocorticoid is discontinued, whichever is longer.
