Consumer:Before using predniSONE, tell your doctor if you also use digoxin. You may need a dose adjustment or special tests in order to safely take both medications together. This combination may cause increased blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, light "halos" around objects, green or yellow vision, fatigue, swollen hands, feet, or ankles (fluid retention). If you take both medications together, tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Systemically administered corticosteroids may induce hypokalemia and possibly increase the risk of digoxin toxicity. In addition, corticosteroid-induced sodium and water retention can result in edema leading to heart failure. These effects may be more common with the natural corticosteroids (cortisone, hydrocortisone) which have greater mineralocorticoid activity.
MANAGEMENT: Electrolyte levels should be monitored carefully in patients who must receive concomitant therapy.
