Before taking phenytoin, tell your doctor if you also use influenza virus vaccine, inactivated. You may need dose adjustments or special tests in order to safely take both medications together. This combination may affect the phenytoin levels in your body. You should notify your doctor if you have symptoms such as drowsiness, visual disturbances, changes in behavior, nausea, or poor muscle coordination. It is important that you tell your healthcare provider about all other medications that you are using including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using your medications without first talking to your doctor first.

MONITOR: Influenza virus vaccine has been reported to exert a variety of effects on phenytoin pharmacokinetics. Both decreases and increases in phenytoin serum concentrations have both been reported. The mechanism is unknown.

MANAGEMENT: Close observation for clinical and laboratory evidence of altered phenytoin effect is recommended for at least 2 weeks after influenza virus vaccine is administered to a patient receiving phenytoin. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they experience loss of seizure control or symptoms of phenytoin toxicity (e.g., drowsiness, visual disturbances, change in mental status, seizures, nausea, or ataxia).
